Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety is a common response to stress and potential threats that can manifest in different forms like generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) and panic disorder. It can have a profound impact on mental and emotional well-being, resulting in excessive worrying, restlessness, and difficulty concentrating. The effects of anxiety can be debilitating, making it challenging to carry out daily life and activities.

The one thing that all anxiety disorders have in common is anxiety-fueled repetitive thinking. Clients with anxiety share a tendency to ‘over-think’ situations and spend a lot of time thinking of worst-case scenarios.

Despite what you might believe, I can assure you that you are not an ‘anxious person’ or a ‘natural born worrier’! It’s simply the case that you have developed habitual, conditioned and repetitive thoughts that create feelings of anxiety.

How anxiety starts can vary in clients. Some clients have learnt to be anxious because they were raised by an anxious parent. More often than not, however, anxiety is formed based on trauma. You may think of trauma as a major event in life. But the truth is anything which sets off our freeze, fight and flight response, which is the body’s survival response, can traumatise us. I’ve witnessed clients who were shouted at by teachers at school who were left feeling traumatised by the event. Managers who had to speak in public in the form of a presentation were left shaken by the experience. Events like this can add up and leave a mark on our inner emotional and mental landscape. But the good news is, we can process these memories effectively with hypnotherapy and create new ways of thinking and feeling.

Types of Anxiety

There are several types of anxiety disorders such as generalised anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (SAD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

My approach to helping you overcome anxiety is a holistic one. I blend solution-focused psychotherapy, Coaching, Hypnotherapy, EFT Tapping Therapy along with other modalities to process trauma, help you to identify habitual patterns of thought, re-wire your thinking and build your confidence and ability to navigate life feeling calm and in control.

Common Symptoms of Anxiety

Anxiety can fluctuate in severity, causing distress and impairment in social interactions. Individuals with anxiety may exhibit irritability, muscle tension, and difficulty falling asleep. Other symptoms include sweating, trembling, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Anxiety commonly presents symptoms such as increased heart rate and rapid breathing. Left untreated, anxiety can grow and have a severe impact on the health of your body because you are living life in the hormones of stress.

Prolonged anxiety taxes the body, increasing vulnerability to cardiovascular issues and respiratory disorders, and compromising the immune system. Physical manifestations may include headaches, muscle tension, and chronic fatigue. Chronic anxiety can worsen existing health conditions and hinder the body’s natural healing processes, emphasizing the importance of addressing physical health consequences for holistic well-being and recovery.

The Impact of Anxiety on Daily Life

Anxiety also has a significant impact on emotional well-being, leading to low self-esteem and social isolation.

As a working professional anxiety will impact your performance at work. Anxiety will impact concentration and focus, trust in yourself and your intuition, impact your ability to retain information and make effective decisions. You may also experience feelings of inadequacy and imposter syndrome.

Anxiety can cause you to experience persistent feelings of fear, negative thoughts, and dread that can have far-reaching repercussions on your emotional well-being. This may manifest as mood swings, irritability, and emotional turbulence.

The Role of Hypnotherapy in Managing Anxiety

Hypnotherapy provides a holistic approach to addressing anxiety by targeting the subconscious mind. It aims to promote relaxation, positive reinforcement, and cognitive restructuring to alleviate anxiety. By empowering individuals to access inner resources and build resilience, hypnotherapy fosters a supportive environment for self-exploration and healing, promoting emotional regulation and understanding triggers.

The Science Behind Hypnotherapy

The essence of hypnotherapy lies in the utilisation of suggestion, visualisation, and relaxation techniques to access the subconscious mind. This heightened state of focus allows for the influence of beliefs, attitudes, and responses, tailored to address individual anxiety triggers. Neurological research corroborates the efficacy of hypnotherapy in modulating anxiety-related brain activity.

What are the benefits of anxiety hypnotherapy over traditional therapies?

Anxiety hypnotherapy offers several benefits when compared to traditional therapies for anxiety treatment. One of the most significant advantages is that it helps in identifying and addressing the root causes of anxiety, without resorting to invasive treatments or medication. Moreover, hypnotherapy can provide quicker relief from symptoms. I also teach clients how to use EFT Tapping which can be used for long-term anxiety management.

Another key advantage of anxiety hypnotherapy is that we are working directly with the subconscious mind. By accessing this part of the mind, individuals can explore and address the underlying issues that trigger their anxious feelings. This approach, especially when combined with Coaching, helps you develop a better understanding of their thought patterns, feelings, and behaviours, leading to lasting positive change.
