Panic attacks can be a scary experience. They can come seemingly out of blue and can leave you feeling very shaken up.
After a panic attack, it’s very common that people develop a deep fear of having future panic attacks and as a coping strategy can find themselves avoiding places and situations in an attempt to keep them at bay.
While panic attacks may seem random, they are activated for a reason, even if that reason isn’t an obvious one.
The unconscious mind is in operation and running the show around 98% of the time, which means that your mind can trigger a physical reaction in the body to something that’s not in your conscious awareness.
Even thought alone is enough to trigger off a panic attack.
When you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, it’s natural to try and get more breath into the body in an attempt to calm yourself down. But in the case of a panic attack, we end up over breathing and creating too much oxygen which results in hyperventilation.
Most panic attacks last between 5 and 20 minutes and the frequency they are experienced really depends on a combination of factors all of which are related to the mind, trauma and thought patterns.
Signs of a panic attack include:
- Sense of impending doom or danger
- Fear of loss of control or death
- Rapid, pounding heart rate
- Trembling or shaking
- Shortness of breath or tightness in your throat
- Chills/hot flashes
- Chest pain
- Dizziness, lightheadedness or faintness
- Numbness or tingling sensation
- The feeling of not being fully conscious
