How to boost your blood sugar levels the smart way

Do you often find yourself craving something sweet mid morning or late afternoon?  Is it hard to resist the temptation to stop by the vending machine at work and buy a chocolate bar?  Wish you had more sustained energy though the day?

Then you need to watch your blood sugar levels!  Eating something which contains a high sugar content will convert quickly to glucose in the body, sending your blood sugar levels sky rocketing.  Because the body will always strive for balance, it then produces insulin to lower your blood sugars, which is why you can then experience that ‘slump’ not long after eating something sugary.  Too much insulin in the body is a big no no for anyone trying to loose weight because it stops the breakdown of fat cells in the body.

Try this delicious apple and mint smoothie in place of your usual snack to balance out blood sugars.

In a blender, whizz 1 chopped apple, 1 pear, 1/2 cucumber, 1tbsp pumpkin seeds, a few fresh mint leaves and a squeeze of lemon.  Stir in 200g of plain low fat yogurt.  Thick with loads of fibre, this is enough for 2 people, or save some in a flask for later.
